Our brain loves wood

Neuroscientific evidence for well-being in wooden interiors.

Under the direction of neurologist Steven Laureys (in collaboration with Fedustria and the research institute Neurensics), it has been demonstrated for the first time in Belgium — through fMRI research — that wooden interiors have a measurably positive effect on human well-being.

The results show that spaces with wood — such as classrooms, offices, or hospitals — not only radiate warmth and comfort but also reduce stress, anxiety, and negative emotions. In contrast to materials like concrete or plastic, which tend to feel cold and unpleasant, wood evokes a sense of safety and connection.

Moreover, according to the study, a wooden environment stimulates cognitive functions such as creativity and problem-solving. People feel more engaged, supported, and encouraged to communicate openly.

The sector sees in these findings an important opportunity to use wooden materials not only for their ecological value but also for their mental benefits.

“Wood use in interiors is highly appreciated… it has a healing effect on our well-being,” says Karla Basselier, CEO of Fedustria.
